Star-Delta Starter Control Panel: The Cost-Effective & Reliable Motor Starting Solution

 

The Star-Delta (Wye-Delta) Starter Control Panel is a proven, economical solution for smoothly starting medium-power three-phase motors. By reducing inrush current and mechanical stress, it protects your equipment and electrical network—offering an optimal balance of performance, durability, and cost for applications like pumps, fans, and compressors that start under light load.

 

How a Star-Delta Starter Works: A Two-Stage Process
This method employs a time-controlled, two-step starting sequence:

  • Stage 1 – Star (Start): Motor windings are connected in a Star (Wye) configuration, applying approximately 58% of line voltage. This significantly reduces starting current and torque.
  • Stage 2 – Delta (Run): After a preset time delay (typically 5-15 seconds), the windings automatically switch to a Delta connection, applying full voltage for normal, efficient operation.
     

Key Characteristics:

  • Reduced Starting Current: Line current is reduced to approximately one-third of the DOL starting current.
  • Reduced Starting Torque: Starting torque is also reduced to one-third, suitable only for light or no-load starts.
  • Two-Stage Switching: Involves a defined current/torque transient during the Star-to-Delta transition.

 

Typical Application: Cost-effective for mid-sized motors (e.g., 15-75kW) that start under low load, such as certain pumps, compressors, and machine tools.
